Home Restaurants, Tips, Guides, And Where To Find Them

Home restaurants are a relatively new phenomenon in the restaurant world. In short, home restaurants are run by professional chefs or everyday people who have a talent and ambition for cooking and would like to share it. Usually dinner events take place in the hosts home.

We estimate that in total there are around 30,000 home restaurants around the world and about 20 services that allow hosts to create their home restaurants.

What to expect

Every host is different but typically the host will greet you at the door, show you to the living room or dining area. Host may or may not offer a drink. Next you'll be seated at the table and the host will start bringing food to the table. For some hosts, their own culture is very important to them, so they might show you different ways of eating.

To get the most out of your experience, ask questions, learn and listen. Some hosts are proud of their heritage and food so naturally they want to share it with you.

As a customer, should I worry about something?

Home restaurants do not have the same legal requirements as normal restaurants do, this means the homes you visit might not be as clean or hygienic but we believe our hosts will take good care of you. So it shouldn’t be any different than you and your friends having a dinner party together.

How does it work for hosts?

New hosts are subject to getting vetted by either online or offline depending on the various services you can find that connect home restaurant hosts and guests or tourists. After being approved, hosts can create their event, including the menu, photos and other relevant information about their event.

Hosts also get to set their own pricing in most cases. It's important for hosts to do the maths to make sure the price they offer covers all expenses. This price can also include the service fee, sometimes services add their fees afterwards. Service fees range from 15% to 30% depending on the company.

Is this actually legal?

In most countries yes! There might be some limitations on what you can offer or how many times you can do this. For example here in Finland, you can host an event 12 times a year and if wish to arrange more, this is easy and simple by sending a food establishment announcement to the authorities.

You need to figure out your local legislation and taxation laws for extra income.

Where can I find home restaurants?

There are no restaurant booking apps that give you the ability to book seats to a home restaurants that we know of at the time of writing this. There are however quite a few home restaurant enabling platforms where you can find home restaurants, we have compiled a small list of the currently active ones:

  • EatAway
  • VizEat
  • WithLocals
  • EatWith
  • DineAway (Hey! That's us!)

Make sure you browse all of them as most of them aren't active in every single country.
